My screen is frozen. I plugged in my iPad 3rd generation to my computer. The response is "cannot connect to iTunes because it is password locked." Any suggestions how to unfreeze my screen? Thank you

My screen is frozen on iPad 3rd generation. Touch iPad. I tried plugging it into my Windows computer. iTunes opened and recognized my iPad but said "it is password locked" and requests my password. Of course I cannot put in the password because the screen is frozen. Any suggestions. Thank you
