data transfer from 2009 macbook pro to new iMac

I'm trying to transfer data from my mid 2000 MacBook Pro to a just purchased iMac. I was told to use an ethernet network cable at the Apple Store. I bought a belkin one there. I hooked the ethernet from the laptop to the imac following the transfer utilities. Both computers were looking for 'other computers', but nothing else happened. What am I doing wrong?

Very 'laymans' explanation would be appreciated. Thanks.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2009), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

As the setup process of the new iMac, it asked if I wanted to transfer data/files.

That would have been the Setup Assistant (only available at the first setup).

So I started the laptop and went to the migration assistant to transfer 'to another mac' while the desktop was the source looking for the other mac. This is as far as I got as it just kept spinning and spinning.

That is not how to use Setup Assistant. Check the excellent resource here about how to transfer data (using a FW/Thunderbolt cable would be fastest):
