file selection

Using a mid 2011, 27 inch iMac (3.1ghz i5 processor and 12GB of RAM)

OS/X 10.9 Mavricks (13A603)

No matter what application or website, when a window pops up to select a file - to attach, to upload, to open - the window flies off the screen immediately. From time to time, I'll get an error message to pop up but it's not something that I can recreate. This is incredibly frustrating as it is keeping me from dong so much work on this computer. I keep having to go back to my MBP as it's not doing this, despite being updated to 10.9 as well.

Anyone else having this issue?

OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:

Same old story. Uninstall stuff you don't need. Uninstall any 3rd party system modifications if you are having mysterious problems. Aren't those the western digitial programs that are corrupting hard drives?

Nov 16, 2013 7:27 PM in response to etresoft

Uninstalled everything that I could find, killed off all of the login items, killed the process for others and no change.

I did boot from a Mavricks USB drive and ran verify disk permissions and then fixed them. While in there, I tried to navigate it to a new image and it actually worked - it let me move around on the HDD to different folders.

Rebooted and the same problem is back in all applications and websites.

Here's the latest etresoft info.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Nov 16, 2013 8:00 PM in response to Linc Davis

Thanks for the suggestion Linc.

I unplugged all external devices, including the thunderbolt display.

I have no aftermarket expansion cards.

All USB, Firewire and Thunderbolt ports were open (clear, nothing plugged in)

Mouse and Keyboard are coordless/Bluetooth

As you indicated, I had to enter my PW to log in.

Yep, same problem.

Rebooted system normally with everything still disconnected.

Same problem.

I actually consider this progress as now, I know for certain that it's nothing that's plugged into the iMac.

If this information helps, prior to updating to Mavricks, this system did have infrequent problems with the UIsystemserver getting hinky and I'd have to quit the process so it would restart. That problem manifested itself in overall system slowdown and the system apps on the upper right (time, time machine, etc., etc.,) would show a spinning beachball.

Nov 16, 2013 10:25 PM in response to cmcveay

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Nov 17, 2013 3:29 PM in response to Linc Davis

Here are the results from the console - three different applications.

Just to throw another little mystery into this - using Safari, the file selection window doesnt "go away", everything works normally.

Good morning and thanks Linc.

Anywhere, all of the time. For example - in Photoshop, I click on "File" and "Open" and I get a window to navigate to the file I want. 90% of the time, before I can do anything, that window flies away without any interaction. The other 10% of the time, I actually have a chance to click in the window and then it flies away. I don't get a chance to select any particular drive, device or location and it does the same thing in every application other than Safari.

Last night, I booted the system from a USB thumb drive and re-installed Mavricks. I haven't had a chance to check it yet but I'll do that when I get home from work this evening. My thinking is that the upgrade may have some corrupted files/permission and by booting from another device and installing the OS again, it could fix it.

If that doesn't work, I'm going to reformat the HD and do a clean install. I've got all of my applications ready to reinstall them if I have to go that far.

After upgrades to 10.7, 10.8, and 10.9, it's probably time to give this thing a fresh start.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.

First, empty the Trash.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.

The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.
