will an install of osx server change the mavericks installation?
What happens to my Maverics installation when I install osx server ? Will my settings and data need to be reentered?

If you install Server, everything will be the same, but now you have got a Server app, and OS X gets some server features. Apart from that, don't worry about your applications, files and settings because they won't be modified.
When the OS X Server download finishes, its installer should appear, so follow its steps to set up the server
