iCloud Keychain not syncing - unable to disable Keychain

Hi,

I have icloud keychain enabled on multiple devices. On my MB Pro, iCloud keychain is not syncing at all.

I have checked all of the settings (correct iCloud login etc) and have found no problems. The solution would seem to be to disable Keychain in iCloud preferences in OS X - except that it wont let me! Every time i uncheck the Keychain box, it rechecks itself. The net result of this is that I am unable to switch iCloud off (all servcies need to be disabled) and that I cannot jumpstart Keychain iCloud by looging out of iCloud and then logging back in.

I have searched these forums for a solution but the only one I can find suggests changing settings in Safari - I have followed the suggestion but it still doesn't fix my problem.

Please help!

The net result of this is that I am unable to switch iCloud off (all servcies need to be disabled)

This is not true, at least on my mac. The individual iCloud services can be left checked and I can sign out of iCloud in the iCloud pane of system preferences.

My other thought is that this may be a problem with a corrupted system preferences .plist file. Try this:

  1. Hold down the option key
  2. in the Go menu in the Finder, scroll down to Library
  3. in Library, find Preferences
  4. in Preferences, find a file called com.apple.systempreferences.plist and drag it to the trash
  5. Don't empty the trash, you may want to put the file back
  6. restart
  7. you will have to reenter your non-default system prefs as a new .plist file will be generated.
  8. if this doesn't work you can put the .plist file back.

Hi Arthur,

Thanks for taking a look at this - I really appreciate it.

Unfortunately, it does not solve the problem. In Mavericks, when I sign out of icloud it cycles through all of my icloud services asking me if I want to delete the info from my Mac - at the end of this process all of the services are disabled EXCEPT keychain and, as a result, i can't sign out of icloud.

Still scratching my head over this one!

Every time i uncheck the Keychain box, it rechecks itself.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Hi,

Below is the console output that is generated when I uncheck the Keychain box in iCloud settings in OS X. Hopefully it's not too bulky!

Many thanks,

Ben

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Dear Linc,

Thanks for taking the time to repsond to my issue! I must apologise for the late reply - i'm back right on top of this problem now. I've worked through your steps with the following results:

Step 1

Guest account login allows me to enable the icloud keychain with success. It also allows me to disable it too.

Step 2.

Safe mode (normal user account) has the same problems as previously - icloud preferences won't allow me to unselect keychain. Rebooting the Mac in normal mode into the same user account results in the same problem.

Hopefully this will help you figure out a solution to this issue!! I'd be very very grateful.

Many thanks,

Ben

I'm having the same problem. I was attempting to help someone using Back to My Mac by logging out of my iCloud account and into their iCloud account.

I don't ever remember enabling Keychain in the iCloud, but somehow it got set. And now I'm stuck. I can't uncheck the Keychain option in iCloud and I can't log out of the iCloud account because the Keychain service can't be deactivate.

When I try to uncheck Keychain, I get this in the console:

I've tried booting in safe mode, running repair permissions, I even ran the keychain first aide. Nothing works and I can't get out of this iCloud account!!

I spent most of the night and next morning chasing this problem.

In other forums, people were successful by doing things like turning off Password and Credit Card autofill in Safari. That didn't work for me.

I tried iosnoop and some other tools to try and figure out what was failing (or at least what files were involved) when trying to disable the iCloud keychain service. I didn't make much progress. I eventually decided to use a (very big) hammer; I moved all of the files in ~/Library/Preferences to a temporary folder and restarted.

Of course, the system came up empty as if it had never been logged in before, including a prompt to log into iCloud. That seemed to work.

I noticed that one of the last files modified during this process was the com.apple.icloud.fmfd preferences file. So I restored all of my preferences files except that one and restarted again. I initially got a bunch of strange errors ("Can't load the iCloud preference pane" and such), but was eventually able to get back into the iCloud preferences.

I was (once again) logged into the offending iCloud account and the Keychain service was still activated. However, this time when I tried to sign out it worked!

I signed back into the my working iCloud account and everything seems to be working again.

Upshot, if you're having the same problem you might try trashing the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.icloud.fmfd file, restart, and see if you can't (eventually) sign out of your iCloud account.

I was logged into a Mac Mini server with my main iCloud account – call it main@icloud.com – and I had the same issue this morning with the same error messages in Console. I was going to try your solution, but when I came back from lunch the Keychain box had unchecked itself, and I was able to log out of iCloud. I logged in with my alternate iCloud account – call it alternate@icloud.com – (to enable Find My Mac) and rebooted the machine.

I thought everything was fine, but after the reboot I noticed that Keychain was enabled as well as Find My Mac. I tried to disable Keychain, but the same error occurred. I launched Keychain Access to investigate, and was VERY DISTURBED to find that the main@icloud.com keychain is loaded in Keychain Access, even though the Mini is no longer associated with main@icloud.com. Even more disturbing is that I can access the passwords in main@icloud.com just using the machine's account password – I don't need the password to main@icloud.com. The implication for you, James, is that conceivably the person you were helping might now have access to your entire iCloud Keychain. This seems like a TERRIBLE security design.

Actually, it was the other way around. I had, and couldn't get rid of, access to their keychain. So this isn't so much a terrible security design as much as it is a poor implementation.

Actually I have this problem as well. iCloud Keychain would not allow me to turn it off. I only have on device so I don't even need it and every time I uncheck it it rechecks itself.

The issue can be temporarily fixed if I were to set-up a new user account and turn keychain on there. But as soon as I delete that user and restart the computer, the keychain would be stuck on again on my personal account.

I also found this message in my Console after having the issue:

SOSCCThisDeviceIsInCircle SOSCCThisDeviceIsInCircle!! 21

I have the same problem - keychain won't sync. Ive never been able to get iCloud keychain working - tried to use it since it came out. Didn't work on my iphone 5 and isn't working on my iphone 6 plus either. Ive tried everything i can think of and everything I've read to do. For me, keychain won't turn off on my iphone. I toggle it off but it just switches back on. And I can never make my mac (which has all my passwords) sync with my iphone in regards to the passwords/credit cards.

iCloud Keychain not syncing - unable to disable Keychain
