Will I still be able to read documents created using Appleworks if I install Pages? I use OS 10.6.8 and will upgrade to maverick.

You are, I'm afraid, in a bind. The currently available version of Pages does not open AppleWorks documents; and AppleWorks does not run on Mavericks.
LibreOffice (free) will apparently open some Appleworks Word processing documents.
Also as long as you have AppleWorks running you can exports Word Processing documents to Word (though if they have drawn objects those may not survive) and open them in various word processing programs. You can save them as PDF from the Print dialog but of course you cannot subsequently edit them.
This article examines the problem in some detail, and I would recommend you should read it thoroughly before making any moves towards Mavericks:
