Q: Macbook pro 2010 keeps crashing

hi,

it has been a good 2 weeks that my macbook pro 2010 13in keeps crashing. It can happen during games or even during light browsing. When it does occur i can hear the sound being looped in the backround. Ive brought it in to apple twice already and they cant seem to reproduce the problem. The temperature doesnt seem to be an issue because even light browsing 50C it crashes. I have to do a hard reset to get it working and sometimes it doesnt recognize my drive or the apple logo boots and after some time it has an O (nothing can load, kinda like no smoking signs with the barred cigarette). Occasionally it also has wifi problems, it disconects and does not reconnect unless i hard reset. All these problems also occur on the windows partition (same circumstances). Please i need some help because i have work and i cannot trust an unstable computer to do work on. (im also running on 10.9) crashes only started after i updated but only on the windows side first.

Try bringing back to the Genius bat, go early and run the machine up tp temp so that it will go into the failure mode at the store.

It may e a logic board, or drive that is failing, but does no do it till it is warmed up. I had an issue similar to this some time back, and it would not do it till it had been running for a while, so I went in early and ran it till it went into failure, they ten were able to disgnose and repair it.

    Good Luck

I've been to the bar twice already and both times failed to provide a failure or a reason. When i gave it in the second time they stress tested it to find any errors and it ran perfectly.. interesting enough, i ran prime95 after getting it back and it ran normally even passing 96C(temp) no problem. I tested again at home and it crashed again while running the exact same tests on prime95. this is getting really fustrating because i cannot seem to get it to crash on command.

The cause is Mavericks (OS X 10.9).  I, too, have a 2010 Macbook Pro and it hangs consistently on sleep.  Even after shutting the machine off as a result of the crash, when I start the machine again, it will hang for no apparent reason and I have to power off my machine several times before it becomes usable again.  This is a pretty bad bug that they shipped Mavericks with (sleep hangs the machine on older macbook pro's).  It's a known issue across the web and on the support forums.  Praying that the 10.9.1 update will include a fix.  It really ***** and it causing hours of wasted time for me right now.

    Here is some relevant information.  Next time you have a kernel panic, post it for inspection.  Then perhaps the issue may be identified that is causing your problems;

I cannot spot any problems in the kernel panic report but I will try to get some assistance from more knowledgable persons who are better at this than I.

Use your original installation disk or boot into the recovery partition and open Disk Utility>First Aid.  Run Verify and Repair.

    Run an Apple Hardware Test:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

    Please report the results.

    Ciao.

I've been to the genius bar twice and both times they verified my hardware everything is working like it should be and I even ran prime95 to see if it would crash and it didn't. Normally it crashes at home with prime95. Could it be my internet? Plus it shouldn't be a software problem because it crashs both on windows and osx. I've clean wiped myself and the people at the genius bar removed the os from my disk. My computer seems to only crash at home so best guess is internet

Looks likely to be a hardware fault, to me - assuming that you erased/installed.

    The memory's been removed/cleaned/re-seated ?.

Follow OGELTHORPE's suggestion to run the AHT yourself, use it in extended mode.

The Apple Hardware Test is an extremely unreliable diagnostic. Getting an all clear is almost worthless. Bring it back in to Apple and have them run the full ASD, Apple Service Diagnostic. And if they say they already did, then have them run it again, or as many times as necessary to detect a hardware fault, since it might not pick up an error on the first run through.

and getting a failure message is very helpful indeed.

That's very likely a hardware-level error.  The usual suspects there can be the processor and memory and mainboard, or — as indicated in that backtrace — potentially the WiFi-related hardware or firmware, if that WiFi device is consistently in the crashes.

The Genius Bar is going to be involved here, and definitely bring along copies of the crashes.

As a possible workaround or a diagnostic based on the crash and the reported symptoms, see if a wired network connection is more reliable.  I'd also look at test-swapping the WiFi router (cheap, easy, and doesn't involve opening the case), then (if I were doing self-maintenance) the WiFi adapter, and then the memory DIMMs.  This based on what's shown in that crash.  Then probably the mainboard.

This presumes you and the folks at the Genius Bar have already checked and cleared the usual suspects, and which appears to be the case based on your description.

and getting a failure message is very helpful indeed.

True, only meant to say that returning no errors in AHT doesn't give it a clean bill of health. AHT will have an almost impossible time picking up a random error. ASD probably the same, but much better at the job than AHT.

They ran a 2 day test on my computer already i think they tried many times but i couldnt seem to get it to crash when i was there either i ran the same program at home with the same settings and it crashed im going to try ethernet and also a usb wifi card lets hope this fixes things because i think beyond this ive tried all the other possible tests ive ran extra 3rd party tests to verify apples work and everything passed. I can only think it is something at home that is causing this and the only left would be wifi unless power is a problem.
