"google chrome helper" using too much CPU?

If you open the Activity Monitor and see that a process called "google chrome helper" is using too much CPU, here's how I fixed it:

I went to Chrome settings/content settings/Plugins and selected Click To Play for all plugins. (The default is Run Automatically.)

This fixed my problem. Now you have to click whenever you want to run a youtube video or other plugins, but it's worth it. It stops those stupid Flash ads from loading, too, so that's an extra bonus.

I'm posting this because when I had the problem, I couldn't find any solutions at all.

Seriously peoples,

ALL Google softwares, including Chrone AND Drive, run like crepe on OS X.

If all of you would just ditch and uninstall Google Chrome and use Mozilla FireFox, which is a much more Mac friendly web browser, BTW, you will eliminate a big source of your Mac's performance issues and frustrations.

Plus, you will get rid of Google mining your data while you are using Chrome.

I have, also, stopped using the Google search engine regularly (due to Google's privacy policies or lack thereof) and I now use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine alongside Yahoo's own search engine.

This did seem to help. Before I changed the Plug in settings Chrome helper would use up to 60% of cpu and often in several instances at the same time. Now it's around 0.5% to 1% - we'll see how long it lasts.

Bottom line: Google and Apple hate each other. Until that is fixed I don't see any of these issues going away while using Google products on an Apple machine. Same deal with Adobe. It's gotten to the point that my next laptop or desktop will likely be a PC. Apple's policy with regard to other software and hardware developers is like Ron Paul's foreign policy, isolationist. They don't play well with others.

I turned off plug ins and ad and acceleration. pretty much anything I could. and for a while this worked, but its back again. still hogging 101% of my processor. I can't drop Google chrome cause its the only browser that plays videos right on my computer, or else they lag out really badly. Ive used fire fox, safari. Chromes the only browser that seems to work right. but one day my processor started capping out of the blue. I find it weird that this is so inconsistent. and how does it come back even after I turned it off and it still SHOULD be off!

Everything Up to date, and I really don't want to upgrade to Yosemite cause I keep hearing bad things, and I have an older 2009 iMac

Am I pretty much dead in the water here. No one could answer my problems with the video lags, and as a youtuber, its kind of a bigger deal than some people think.

(Edit)

Also like to add I just tried safari again and its got this thing called Safari Web Content running thats doing the same exact burden as chrome helper. so seems like it doesn't matter what, screwed no matter what I use.

I tried both "Detect and run important plugins" and "Let me choose when to run plugin content." I decided to go with "Dectect and run" because there were some plugins that I couldn't click to run, like the Facebook photo uploader, so it was a royal pain to have it set to "Let me choose." I am still getting some unusual fan action and I've had one computer "freak out" since making the switch, but at least my computer has been performing better and the problem isn't happening as often.

What video are you trying to stream?

I have been using Firefox for many years to stream video from Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Vimeo, etc. with no lag or issues.

I use pop-up ad blockers with Firefox and other extensions that squelch banner ads, as well.

You need to keep most web browsers from processing other web content on a site to be able to more effectively stream video?

Your Mac may have other issues, also, preventing your Mac from processing Streaming video.

What year and model Mac do you own?

How much RAM does your Mac have?

How full is your Mac's hard drive?

Do you run a lot of other applications in the background while trying to stream online video.

How many apps do you have launching at startup/login?

Too many apps running in the background use up RAM and other CPU processes.

Do have any unnecessary anti virus and/or cleaning apps like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMy Mac, MacCleanse, etc on your Mac?

Is Adobe Flash Player up to date?

Do you use Google Drive, as well? I would either disable or totally uninstall Google Drive, if you do.
