Q: "google chrome helper" using too much CPU?

If you open the Activity Monitor and see that a process called "google chrome helper" is using too much CPU, here's how I fixed it:

I went to Chrome settings/content settings/Plugins and selected Click To Play for all plugins.  (The default is Run Automatically.)

This fixed my problem.  Now you have to click whenever you want to run a youtube video or other plugins, but it's worth it.  It stops those stupid Flash ads from loading, too, so that's an extra bonus.

I'm posting this because when I had the problem, I couldn't find any solutions at all.

Having the same issues.  On OSX 10.9.2.  Macbook Mid 2013  1.7 gHz

Have had my new computer for about a month.

Last night I made some changes (enabled chat and email notifications in Gmail, which separately required me to permission Chrome to display) and suddenly battery life is at best half what it has been.

I un-did all the settings in Gmail, but it hasn't had any improvement.  Typically I'd have my laptop at 50% battery life by end of work day and now it will run out of juice after 4-5 hours tops. Chrome also shows up now under "Apps Using Significant Energy" and in Activity Monitor its average energy impact is the highest app by far (currently at 19, but I've been purposefully keeping only a few windows open).

I'm going to experiment with having Gmail open or closed and see if that makes a difference, but either way I'm very very unhappy...especially after LOVING my new Haswell / Macbook battery love.  It's a big letdown and I'm not sure who is the culprit or what to do about it.

    Any ideas?

I've done al these fixes and nothing's worked for me. I'm running latest OS on my imac 27" and have for a while now. But it's only just recently that I've noticed, hey, why's my hard drive running-on in the background? Sure enough I check Activity Monitor and there's Google Chrome Helper--over two dozen iterations of it--dominating the top 25 of the list of %CPU. But like I say it's only lately it's been happening.

I am having the same issue, except I am running OS 10.7.5. Perhaps it is a change in Chrome over the past week or two. It just started happening with me as well. I did download a free font from cnet, but I checked no on the applications it asked to install.

Are there cleaners that we can run to optimize performance? Has a malware or a virus attached to the Mac, is it just a Chrome issue? I'm curious to find out if there is a solution and what you all find out.

    Thank you!!

Have you tried removing extensions and apps from chrome, if you installed any? I found that each extension created a new google chrome helper process.

I have done the same but it appears there is a direct correlation between how many windows you have open as oftern have 12 + when working but have just worked out that has direct effect ie. close windows Google helper reduces to nothing. I am not a techie but seems to have worked

This may be a little late, but for anyone wondering... I had incredibly choppy scrolling with Chrome for at least 2-3 months on Mavericks 10.9.3 and 10.9.4 with my Late-2013 rMBP 2.3GHz w/ 750M. On both integrated and discrete graphics, Chrome would scroll terribly on the rMBP display -- but it scrolls just fine on my external 1920x1200 24" monitor (driving both screens at the same time) on integrated graphics! I figure this is definitely a bug in Chrome. I knew I'd messed with the Chrome experimental flags before, so I decided to take a peek.

Here are the steps I took that seemed to fix my choppy scrolling:

    1. Type "chrome://flags" into the URL bar
    2. Found "Accelerated overflow scroll" as the second option - was set to Default
    3. Changed this to Enabled
    4. Restarted Chrome
    5. After letting tabs load, it seems to have scrolling pretty close to, if not the same as it used to be before. I have less CPU usage from scrolling, switching tabs, and playing content.
    6. I turned it off and restarted Chrome after testing out a variety of websites to see if the issue would come back. Strangely, the issue is gone. Maybe a setting got stuck somewhere and I reset it. I DUNNO.

Someone else give this a try if you're having the same issue. Hope this helps!

    Thanks!

It works on my config: MBA mid-2013 Yosemite Beta 2 Google Chrome 38 64-bit. Now no more “Google Chrome Helper not responding”, lowered CPU and RAM usage, system more responsive.

Google apps run like garbage on all newer versions of OS X

Chrome and Drive are always problematic with each new OS X release.

All of your Macs will run better without any Google software installed.

My recommendations to everyone who has posted here is to completely uninstall ALL Google apps and if you do not like Safari as your primary browser, try Moziila FireFox, instead. FireFox is a LOT more stable on all newer versions of OS X and Mozilla constantly and consistently keeps up with frequent updates to FireFox.

    Uninstall Chrome

    Uninstall Drive

Google apps are a world of hurt for your Mac.

In Google Chrome for each plug-in, process, application, or there is a separate tab process. These processes can be seen and forced to complete the task manager Chrome.

Open Activity Monitor и Task Manager, look at the processes "Google Chrome Helper", identify them by PID.

In the "monitor activity" Chrome Helper shown as "not responding", but in the manager is operating normally.
