iPhone put into Recovery Mode after updating to 7.0.4, and now iTunes can't restore it from my computer. What do I do?

Once my iPhone 4 updated the iOS to 7.0.4, it immediately went into Recovery Mode, with the iTunes symbol. I plugged it into my computer, and it says I need to restore the iPhone. I click Restore, but in says it can't connect because of my network connection. I've followed every troubleshooting issue from the support section related that issue, but it STILL won't connect and download the recovery.

What do I do to get my iPhone fixed? And why did 7.0.4 cause this?

7.0.4 did not cause it. There was something corrupt in the data on your phone. You will need a network connection from your computer to the Internet to restore the phone. If you have one your antivirus or firewall may be blocking the Restore. If you can't resolve this try using a different computer or take it to an Apple store and they will restore it for you.

Same thing just happened to my iPhone 5s when iTunes suggested that I update the software to iOS 7.0.4. After it got stuck in recovery mode I had to download Recboot in order to bring my phone back to life (i.e. exit recovery mode). Not something I'd expect to have happen on a six week old device that's 100% legal. My suggestion for those of you unfortunate enough to experience what I just experienced is to use Recboot rather than restore you phone to its factory settings.

I strongly advise against using recboot, as it hacks the iPhone and can cause future problems to both your iPhone and your computer.

If an over-the-air update fails it usually means that the download was corrupted or the internet connection was not reliable. The correct solution is to connect the phone to iTunes and Restore using iTunes.

Yes, all the data on my iPhone was intact after using Recboot to kick it out of recovery mode. That said, you may want to strongly consider what Lawrence wrote in response to my original post (i.e. the dangers of using Recboot). I haven't done enough research to weigh in on the debate. It should also be mentioned that I was connected to iTunes when my failed update took place; a guy at the Apple Genius Bar seemed to think that an over-the-air update would be less likely to be corrupted.

Don't worry about that. iPhone stuck in recovery mode always happens when you update the iOS on your iPhone. There are two ways to solve it.

First is is to put your iPhone in DFU mode.

Step 1. Turn off iPhone

Step 2. Hold down the Power and Home button.

Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the Home button down.

Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that it’s in restore mode.

If DFU mode can't solve the problem, I'm afraid the only solution is to try some 3rd party software, like iPhone data recovery or something like that. You may simply try the tutorial here: How to Fix iPhone that is Stuck in Recovery Mode.
