Early 2008 - multiple crashes, usually on startup

Iʻve been nursing this sick beast along for over a year, with multiple visits to the Genius Bar, with no fixes in sight. Here are the specs:

Processor 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

Memory 14 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

Graphics ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB

Software OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

Bay 1 - Startup; Bay 2 Windows 7; Bay 3 - Time Machine; Bay 4- Windws 7 Backup

It started crashing a little over a year ago, after running well for three years. It sometimes crashes a dozen times on startup (Iʻve counted) before calming down and actually booting up. It can take a half hour to actually boot into a stable state. The other critical information is that the folks at the Genius Bar put the computer through stress tests and on each visit it performed well. However, they undoubtedly did this in an AC environment. I live just south of the Tropic of Cancer, in Honolulu, and do not live and work in an AC environment. Maybe just a coincidence but the latest series of crashes appear to have coincided with a rise in temperature (about 78 at the moment).

Here is what Iʻve already tried:

- all the recommended stuff (permissions repair, zapram, SMC reset, etc.) The reason I know it is not a software issue is that the computer also crashes when I am running Windows 7 in Bootcamp.

- I paid an electrician to create a dedicated circuit for just this computer, and then put the whole house on a Honneywell whole-house surge protector.

- I purchased an APC Back-Ups XS 1500 power conditioner to replace the surge protector I had been using.

- I downloaded a utility to control fan speed and set internal fan speed to 1500 rpm.

- After speaking with a former Apple technician, I placed a fan at the rear, blowing directly onto the computer.

That last fix actually sort of worked — for a while. However the thing has started crashing again, and now I have a small tower fan blowing directly into the front of the tower (a bit awkward on my desk) and the side cracked open, to allow heat to escape. The thing has now worked for about 40 minutes, fingers crossed.

Can someone recommend an add-on internal fan that will help with heat dispersion? I assume the issue is heat.

thanks!

Jan B.

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Select the most recent panic report (with a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic") under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as a hang report.

I would not put faith in your FBDIMMs or 2600XT

Windows 7 DVD has a version of Memtest that works well. Normally you would use 800MHz, 667 I recommend are cheaper and work fine.

2600's have had a lot of problems and the 5770 works better in 10.8

It is not normal to run the fans with a minimum 1500 rpm, usually 900-1100 is 'enough' to push enogh extra air for coolng. The FBDIMMs I linked run cooler and better by a good 10*C or more than older FBDIMMs. That is one source of heat.

Thanks for the directions to the kernel panic report. I hope you can extract some suggestions. This was the last kernel panic, although there have been many crashes since. It is a little out of my pay grade to interpret:

Thanks for the links! The 5770 graphics card is advertised for the mid-2010 models. If you will re-confirm that it will work with my early 2008 model, Iʻll go ahead and order, along with the updated memory. I posted the last kernel panic report in response to the reply by Linc Davis - that might provide a little more context.

Posted below is a temp. readout from a utility I downloaded. Unfortunately, I do not have the experience to interpret it. Perhaps the readings are normal, perhaps not.

This kernel panic report is a Machine check, uncorrected error. This is extremly likely to be an uncorrectable Memory error. In some cases you get lucky and it calls out the module. You did not get lucky here.

The panic occurred in Power Management, which is the routine that handles memory errors. This adds weight to the probability that you are facing Memory errors.

The comments section on the product page; the 10s of thousands of user posts here; that it is being recommended for any and all Mac Pro models as long as the user has at least 10.6.5 (which is 99.9% and pretty much a given).

Rare to find someone recommend a product that won't and does not work (can happen).
