My Superdrive has just packed in. Can I upgrade to a Blu-ray drive to write Bru-ray discs for storage and movie playback?

Yes you can, though it's hard to find IDE/ATA Blu-Ray drive.
I've also read it done hear by using a proper IDE->SATA adapter on a G5, but you'll still need some 3rd party Software to handle it.
Thanks for you replies. Can anyone recommend a Blu-Ray player on the market I can use? Is there a link to the installation of the Sata adaptor?
I'm not sure on the newer Blu Ray players, but some past notes...

That great news BDAqua found the convertor, just need to know whether I need additional sofware or does it come with the player? Not many player say they are for Mac only PC!!!
Trouble is going to be finding old PPC G5 software.
As far as I know, there isn't actually any available software player that is PPC and will run blu-ray on the Mac. God knows, I've looked over the past few years.
At best you can get your hands on the PPC versions of Handbrake and rip disks in nice high-res to your hard drive then encode them so they play in QuickTime or VLC.
For the PPC platform, and mostly because of the age of the software, you've got blu-ray storage capacity, what's that, 25 GB per disk? only.
This sounds like a lot of work when I will find it difficult to find software to play the discs!!
Would I be able to use an external Blu-ray drive or would it not make any differance?
I don't think it will make a bit of difference. The issue is that PPC computers are now so old few developers are left to write programs for them.
Maybe, and this is a BIG maybe, there is a linux developer still writing for PPC - I know yellowdog linux is for Power architecture, but as far as it working on Mac hardware let alone having blu-ray drive playback capacity.. it's anybody's guess.
Your G5 is incapable of playing blu-ray movies. Its simply not powerful enough to decode HD video.
Thanks for all you replies. I thing I will just put a standard DVD writer to replace the superdrive and buy another external drive to back my files with.
