I'm getting the same issue, but with Mavericks (10.9). I get that message when I try to create a new folder from the save/print dialog. If I try to save directly it either (a) proceeds & looks like success but does not actually create the file (for example in Mail.app), or (b) pops up a message saying "Document [name] could not be saved" (e.g. in Preview).

It seems that the issue is with the way applications access the disk - the issue is not specific to Mail and does not appear to affect Finder itself.

I've run a disk permissions repair, I've changed my network MAC addresses (based off information here: http://support.iawriter.com/help/discussions/mac-problems/33-unable-to-save-any- file-os-x-1068), I've restarted Finder (hold option, right click icon in Dock and choose "Relaunch"), I've tried to lots of different folders within my home directory.

The work-around that did work was to duplicate the file in Preview (unfortunately won't help in Mail) and choose to rename/save it from the title bar (https://www.dropbox.com/s/p5qfk1ys07g9ol5/Screenshot%202013-11-19%2012.19.14.png). That kicked Preview in the pants and for now it repeatedly saves documents & creates new folders from the save dialog without troubles. This will revert though - it's not the first time I've had this behaviour (previously I created the folders manually to workaround it).

Good luck Fabio! Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply, my details were not correct, I am in fact also using Mavericks.

I am able to save to my desktop from mail but none of my documents folders.

This is a real pain! I am not sure how to correct this as it is time consuming and very inconvenient to change the way I work rather than operate like I should be able to.

Anyone else?

I think I resolved the issue. I am not sure why this happened, but with the new OSX update mail does not get access to the folders except for Downloads. So I changed the permision to the folder I wanted mail to create folder and download in. I gave Read & Write access to 'everyone'. And it works fine for me.

Hope this helps!

I right click on each folder to Get Info and some of them show as Read Only.

I also checked Get Info on Mail application and there are 3 items (Me, staff and Everyone). I changed everything to Read & Write but still I can't save attachment to my chosen target folder.

This happened to me once but I can't find the link to the article where it shows how to change this setting because I remembered something about you have to use the Advanced setting under Users in the System Preference.

I will try to find that article again and link it here because it helped me then. Not sure why this happened again. But I did have a problem with VSearch adware issue few days ago (my sister downloaded some stuff over torrent and it messed up my system so I did a clean up). This could be the reason to my problem today.

It's just weird that even now my folders and Mail application are all Read & Write, I still can't save attachment.

Will update once found that article.

Be sure you are fully updated to OS X 10.9.3. I suggest you use the combo updater. It will refresh all your files plus update.

I still can't fix this issue.

This is what happens when I try to create a new folder in the target folder that I want to save my attachments too. The target folder has Read & Write access for everyone.

I've tried:

  1. Accessing Repair Utilities and typed in resetpassword
  2. Resetting the permissions on my computer
  3. Relaunch Finder

But so far nothing works and I still get the Read Only error message when trying to create a new folder to save my attachments.

I've used these steps by Linc Davis, who is like a savior for everything Mac!

Now my email is back to normal!
