Two desktops?

Why do I have a desktop on my main drive and a desktop in my home folder?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 2.5 GHz intel core i5 with 12GB mem

I'm still confused. The Finder, i.e., the Desktop should only show mounted volumes and other things if you've elected to display them via the Finder's prefs.

If you open the boot volume Desktop icon and put it into list view, you should see stuff like this, where each user has a Desktop folder, and there is no Desktop folder at the root level:
