Q: iPod Shuffle (4th Generation) wont connect to iTunes

Hello,

I have a iPod Shuffle (4th Generation) that refuses to connect to iTunes on my MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010) running OSX 10.9

I have made sure that it is running the latest version of iTunes from the app store

Does anyone know what going on?

Thanks.

iPod shuffle, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Does the shuffle's light come ON when you connect it to USB?  If it does, what does it do?

In the lates iTunes, do you have the sidebar (along left side of window) visible.  If it is not visible, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  When you connect the shuffle, it does not appear in the sidebar, under DEVICES?

The light comes on but only does a still (not flashing) green light to signify that its charged.

I have attached a image below showing the fact that its not showing up at all in iTunes :/

The shuffle's light stays solid (not flashing) from moment you connect it?  It does not flash initially for a few seconds?  The solid light may indicate that the shuffle has a power connection, but it does not have a data connection, like when it is connected to a USB power adapter instead of a USB port on your Mac.

As a test, shut down (power off) your MacBook and disconnect all USB devices, including any hub.  If its power adapter is not connected, connect it (so that it's not running on battery power).  Do this to reset the shuffle

Start up the MacBook, run iTunes, and connect shuffle to a direct USB port on MacBook.

You have probably ruled out a problem with the USB connection, so the remaining possibilities are faulty USB cable and a problem on the shuffle.

There are separate connection points for data and power, so it is possible for the shuffle to charge, while not being able to connect to sync data.  If the shuffle's light did any blinking at all, there is a data connection.  But since it never blinks, the shuffle seems to only see the connection for power, not data.

To rule out a faulty USB cable, you'll need to try your shuffle with another USB cable or use the cable you have with another shuffle.  If you can't do that with what you have, and there is an Apple Store nearby, you may want to make a reservation at the store's Genius Bar (the store's tech support).  Take your shuffle there, along with your USB cable.

If you can rule out the USB connection and the USB cable as causes, the problem is likely to be on the shuffle.  It may be related to the headphones jack, or the logic board.  NOTE:  If it has been less than one year since the purchase date, it is under warranty.
