Since updating to IOS7 each time I am making a phone call, the mute button is accidentally touched with my cheek and my call is muted. This makes the other side think I have hung up and I am unaware they cannot hear me. This renders the iphone useless as a phone! Is there a fix for this problem??

iPhone 4S, iOS 7

Take the screen protector or case off.

Make a call to a friend and cover with your hand the top part of your phone, is the proximity senor working?

pardon my ignorance - what is the proximity senor?

you cant see it its a sensor.  just remove your case and screen protector.

The sensor detect how close you are and switches the iPhone screen controls off.

I have taken the case off, no screen protector, made a phone call, covered the top half of the phone, and can still hear and be heard?? This is my daughter's Iphone 4 that we are having problems with,- when it goes "mute" , I can hear a ringing/dial tone in the background. Any other suggestions??

I did have the cracked glass on this phone repaired several months ago - not through Apple, just a phone booth repair place. The problem has only just started but do you think it could connected to that? When I make a call and cover the top of the phone, nothing happens - in fact I cannot see where the sensor is, unlike my Iphone 5 which has a small dot. Should I be able to see the sensor?

I meant placing the hand infront the top part of the iPhone and the screen should be off but you can still hear and talk.  This sensor prevents your cheek/ear from accidental tap the screen (example: Mute, End Call).

Normally you can have your iPhone through Out of Warranty replacement for a fee but if your iPhone was repaired by an unauthorize repairer, all bets are off. Apple might not touch it. You can try make an appointment with the Apple genius bar and have them evaluate.
