A couple of things to check: System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login Items tab - make sure Automator is not listed.
It could also be part of OS X's Resume feature causing it to launch. Any application that is open at Shutdown?restart will relaunch unless you deselect the tick box shown in the image below:

Nov 19, 2013 5:52 PM in response to Paul_31by ellaz17,Hi Paul_31,
I am running 10.7.5.
As for my open at start up items they include: Google Chrome/Drive/notifier and Music Manager. i have tried to hide automater. could it be as a result of having google drive open at start up?
thanks! ellaz17

Nov 19, 2013 10:37 PM in response to ellaz17by Paul_31,If it's not in your startup items and you are certain the app is not open at shutdown (not just closed - make sure it is quit using Command+q) and you have deselected the tick as shown in the image, I'm stuck for other suggestions. Hopefully someone else will chime in with ideas.
