You need to tell us a whole lot more to have any hope of receiving help here.
I am not running Mavericks.
Yes I have a pages 09
No I have not received an update notice for pages
Yes, I have an Apple ID, but it has been changed since I bought the Pro in 2010
The pages update through the Apple Store costs $19.99
Do I have to pay for an Update?

The fact that you changed your Apple ID since you bought the Mac is likely the problem.
It sounds as if your former Apple ID owned Pages '09, which means your current Apple ID does not. Therefore, you are trying to newly purchase Pages, and it will cost you $19.99.
Oh, sorry, I incorrectly assumed that aacosta1420 responded to my questions. That person never did respond.
So I guess my response above will help lutzja, and aacosta1420's mystery remains.
I don't think that was the OP who just replied. I think someone just thread jumped and confused the OP's issue.
Just realized that you realized! lol 😉

lutzja, why are you in the Mavericks forum if you are not running Mavericks? Try the appropriate forum for the OSX version that you are running.
Cheers

Help needed with Pages. I have the '09 version. That original icon is still in my dock, but when I open a new document, the icon is automatically converted to newest version icon, which I have not purchased or downloaded. I can open it, but now cannot open previously written Pages documents, even though they too have had the icons changed. I don't understand this at all. My OS is 10.9.1 I'm not running Mavericks. Can you answer / and or re-direcrt?
Many thanks in advance. This is just perplexing!
You might have better luck posting in the Pages community since you are experiencing a Pages specific problem. I'll ask the hosts to move your post.
It sounds like you already have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

I am running the latest iOS Mavericks
Pages were previously loaded on my MacBook Pro, it was purchased in late 2010
I received a pages letter, that cannot be opened until I update my present Pages.
Mavericks is OSX 10.9.
Mavericks is not iOS which runs on iPhones, iPod Touchs and iPads.
Please don't jump in on another thread with a confused version of what is happening to you.
If you are on a Mac and running Mavericks then see my explanation above.

Thank You Peter, I did not mean iOS Mavericks, wrong terminolgy. It is Mavericks for my MacBook Pro, I updated my iWorks '09. And it included Pages, finally figured it out, but Thanks again for the quick reply and all the Help.
