Q: Microsoft Office programs crash when I try to printing in Mavericks

If you press the PDF button in the print dialog and select to Save As PDF, do you get the same symptom?

If you don't, then there could be a compatibility issue with Office and the plugins used by the printer driver. One test would be to create a dummy printer using the Generic Postscript driver included with OS X. Open Printers & Scanners and select to add a printer. If the small Nearby Printers window appears, select "Add Printer or Scanner" and then select the IP icon. Enter an IP address like 10.0.1.100, change the Name to Test and select the Generic Postscript driver in the Use menu. Add this printer and then open a Word document. Select to print with the Test printer and click Print. Does this crash Word?

Thanks for testing that. I'm still inclined to blame a printer driver as the cause of the crash. The crash log may give you some insight into what is causing the crash.

You could try a reset of the printing system. Note that this action will remove all devices from the Printers & Scanners pane, but not the supporting drivers, so you will have to add the devices again after the reset.

Since you did an upgrade it may also help to Repair Disk Permissions

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Step 1

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Step 2

In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

What kind of printer are you using? Post the crash log please.

I've found that Office 2008 programs in Mavericks crash when you try to open the print dialog box (by selecting File > Print...)

When you use the Print icon on the Standard Toolbar it successfully sends to the printer with opening print dialog box first.

Can you post the crash log?

Mine is crashing too. Both with cmd P or using File-Print. I seem to have Word for Mac 2011.

Thank you for posting the crash log. It looks like Rapport - security software? - is causing the crash. Is it possible to delete or update this? Are you also crashing in other apps?

I hadn't noticed other crashes but I've just moved over from one old iMac to this new one with Mavericks so it's all new at the same time. I had a small problem with mail yesterday but I think that was a coincidence. Rapport was something my internet banking site added in. I can't find it in my apps list to delete or update. I'll have a look

When you use the Print icon on the Standard Toolbar it successfully sends to the printer with opening print dialog box first.

I've just tested this on my own system by:

- opening a Word file in Word 2008 and printing it: no problems

- opening the same file in Word 2011 and printing it: again no problems

Ok, I tried updating Rapport and still no good. Now I've uninstalled Rapport and it's still crashing. It makes no difference if I use cmd P, file-print or even selecting print to PDF.

My husband is also on mac and upgraged to Mavericks and he says he hasn't had a problem. :-(

Does it still crash with the same crash?

Does it still crash if you boot in safe mode?

Yes, it was still crashing but I've just had an app update for my printer and it seems to have fixed the problem! Thanks so much for your help.
