windows media player, windows media files, flip4mac

from my understanding windows media player and flip4mac are not universal binary and since there demanding files rosetta won't work that well with them. the computer that i am concerned about is the macbook. does anyone have a solution? Windows media files are very common on the internet.

Eric, I thought I'd reply to you since I see you have a Cubs logo and may have experience, as a baseball fan, with content on mlb.com. I'm a new mac user who just bought a bmacbook this weekend. I've downloaded the newest flip4mac (version 2.1) which folks here here suggested, windows media player 9 (which doesn't seem to do anything other than open a blank window with a play and stop button bar at the bottom), and tried running both safari and firefox with ahd without rosetta, yet some WMA files still won't run. Most vexing to me is my inability to listen to game day audio from www.mlb.com. The audio player on the website appears but there's no sound and no playback bar (with the play and stop button, streaming time elapsed, etc.). Am I doomed never to have access to this (and some other) content from my macbook?

Was having similar problems accessing mlb.com gameday audio. Found this thread on the flip4mac site:
http://www.flip4mac.com/fusetalk/forum/messageview.aspx?catid=32&threadid=1421&e nterthread=y

This involves using Firefox. Instructions are to delete windows media player and plug-ins; empty the trash; download and reinstall windows media player.

I did this and it worked for me.

Hope this helps. I was missing my Cubs games.

MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I just bought an intel macbook and have been through some "trials" using wmp and fli4mac with different downloads. Here's what I've found:

mlb.com gameday audio WILL NOT WORK if flip4mac is on the hard drive. You must have wmp 9 downloaded and then UNINSTALL flip4mac. mlb audio will open a new wmp window (unlike on the older macs) and then work fine.

the following will also work with wmp9 w/o flip4mac

BBC.com videos, NPR.com audio

CNN.com videos will not work without flip4mac. With flip it opens a quicktime window and then plays a very lousy streaming video; the streaming is only seconds ahead of the playback so there are stops and starts.

Also, with flip4mac, NPR.com opens the quicktime window and plays the crappy streaming audio rather than the very clean download you get with the wmp window.

My solution: forget flip4mac for now until they make a better patch. MLB is almost over. Who knows what next season will bring, download wise. I miss the cnn videos, but BBC news is just as good if not better. Also, things like amazon.com samples of cd tracks can play on real player.

I would really appreciate it if somebody had some comprehensive info on what's going on with all of this.

Flip4Mac is pretty essential for me...here's my tests:

MLB.com A/V streams fine with Flip4Mac from the home page, but I couldn't test the gameday audio since it's a subscription thing that requires payment.

BBC.com A/V plays fine with F4M...no problems...just watched the thing about Madonna and the adoption issue.

NPR.com audio streamed perfectly via F4M. I looked for a music cut that was featured during one the programs, as well as other things....no prob.

CNN plays, but does have a regular pausing pattern issue. I'm going to contact Telestream and see if they are aware of this. In the past they have been responsive to requests...I'm sure CNN is high enough profile that they'll update for it, if they haven't done so already.

Amazon sample music plays back fine with F4M in my browsing.

Something you may not have thought about is that you can disable F4M control within it's preference pane. If you have a site that truly won't deal with it, and wants WMP, then just turn it off in the prefs...lots easier than going through the uninstall.

FYI, Flip4Mac specs; supports WM7, 8, 9, 9 Advanced, ISO MPEG 4 V1.0 & V1.1, Microsoft MPEG 4 V2 & V2 along with multiple audio codecs. Add to that the web plugin for streaming A/V. Generally speaking, Telestream has really done a thorough job covering all the major codecs and formats, however, If something isn't playing correctly, then it's an issue with the content provider using an unusual, non-standard, format. Still, Telestream continues to update and add these oddballs as they can.
