Is there anything wrong with charging my iPhone 5S (or my wifes iPhone 5) with my old 10W iPad 2 charger (and my new iPhone lightening cable)? Can I do that without causing adverse battery issues? Thanks!

Not significantly faster in my experience.
However, if you use the iPhone charger for the iPad, it will charge, but VERY slowely and sometimes if you are using it while plugged into the iPhone charger, the iPad will actually lose a charge, because the iPhone charger is a bit small for the iPad. But it won't cause damage.
No. Charging speed is regulated by the charging circuit inside the phone. The 5 W charger can supply all the current it can use. The 10W can't add to that.
