Transfer contact data from PC to Contacts

I have a text file on my PC containing a list showing First name, Surname, Email and Mobile Phone number. (I can edit it if necessary.) Is there some way I can get this data into the Contacts app on my iPad (original, under iOS 5.1.1), without connecting it to iTunes please? This would avoid a lot of manual keying.

As someone is bound to ask, I have a strong nervousness about using iTunes, following bad experiences a year or two ago which resulted in loss of data.

Can I perhaps employ 'The Cloud' in this context, although I'm sadly ignorant about its practical use.
