How do I look at data that was backed up on an external HD? The application cannot be opened because it is in a time machine back up.

Use Finder to browse that external drive. You can use the Time Machine applet in your Applications folder if the backup drive is connected to your Mac. But I use Finder.
I do see some files in finder, but not all. I have quite a few videos that I wanted tp make sure were backed up and they are not there. I also do not see almost all of my photos. If I don't see them in finder, does that mean they are not backed up on my external HD?
Did you use iMovie or import them with iPhoto?
iPhoto by default stores imprted item deep in its library folder structure. So the movies might be there but they are in the iPhoto Library.photolibrary Package (which is really just a folder with many sub-folder but Apple does like users looking in it so they make it a Package).
I'm pretty sure I used imove. When I backed out old computer this morning, it took quite a long time (several hours) so I am assuming everything backed up on the external HD, I just can't find where. Thank you for your help. I will keep exploring and hopefully I will come across my data. I just didn't think it would be this hard to find.
