You can simply Migrate from one Mac to the other over the network or via Target Disk Mode.

Open Migration Assistant on both Macs if you use the network.

Nov 20, 2013 4:55 AM in response to Drew Reeceby Verna0511,The two MACs are 1600 miles apart. I brought the backup disk from the original to the one I wanted to copy to.
I gave up on trying to migrate as well as save the original account on the second MAC and just migrated from a cold boot. That migration worked flawessly but I would like to know why the original attempt failed to create a second account

There should be logs.
Take a look through the Console, see if you can find any Migration Assistant logs. It may have info otherwise the installer may indicate if it couldn't launch MA etc.
