Q: storage full message, but nothing being 'stored'

my usage says I have 1.1GB tied up in text messages even though I have them deleted. Also a large amount tied up in documents? how do I find and delete that stuff? keep getting a "memory storage full" message.

iPhone 5, iOS 7.0.4
