To buy unlocked iphone 5s in US

I asked my friend to buy me an iphone 5s in the United States to use it in Russia. He came to apple store in San Diego where genious said to my friend that there are no unlocked iphones 5s in the US to sell and they got the only iphones with contract in apple store, in spite of the fact that unlocked iphone 5s is available at apple.com website. Is that true that there are no unlocked iphones in the US or genious in San Diego was wrong on this?

There is no stand alone officially unlocked iPhone 5S available in the US, at the present time. So, in that respect, the genius is correct. However, the T-Moble labeled iPhone 5S, if purchased directly from Apple, is in fact officially unlocked, and will work/activate on any supported GSM carrier, anywhere in the world.

Be aware, a US iPhone's warranty/support is only valid in the US, & the phone will not support LTE anywhere other than North America.
