I have a friend who's going to Florida for the New Year . If he buys me an unlocked iphone 5 (s or c) in Florida , will it work in the UK with a UK SIM ( in case it matters I use Tesco mobile who use O2 as the carrier)

I would suggest you not buy an iPhone in the US if you don't live there. Even if you buy an officially unlocked iPhone, and Apple is not yet selling truly unlocked 5S models in the US, you won't get LTE in the UK and will get no warranty support outside of the US. Buy your iPhone in your home country.
