Slow Safari....Mavericks Update???

Ever since we updated to Mavericks, my wifes and my laptops have been acting slow. Mostly noticable in Safari, but noticing a few other areas as well.

We both have 13" Macbook Pro's (mid 2012) 2.9 i7, 8GB Ram.

The issues:

When surfing the web, many/most sites will start to load, then slow, almost to a stop...wait, and then load...sometimes it loads slowly, sometimes it loads fast.

Internet download speeds are fine, 15 - 16 mbps at home, and close to 50 mbps at work (same issues at work)

Sometimes the finder does not populate very quickly, sometimes taking a minute or so.

I have used ONYX to clean, clean, clean... reset safari, cleard cache, deleted cookies, did Permissions and etc.

I have also changed DNS and killed the prefetching and etc....

ANY SUGGESTIONS? THIS IS ANNOYING.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can point me in the right direct... and this is the same on BOTH computers.

Steve

Do you have any anti-virus software installed? Such software has been known to cause browser issues. What about other browser extensions? In Safari's preferences window, click the Extensions icon... What shows up there?

As for the issues not related to the browser, see my Mac Performance Guide:

Third party cleaning utilities are not necessary on a Mac and can do more harm than good.

Your Mac runs maintenance in the background for you > Mac OS X: About background maintenance tasks

Apps such as LIttle Snitch, MacKeeper, and Growl can cause the issues you are describing for Safari.

Try this for Safari on one Mac ...

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following:

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.

Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If that didn't help, try troubleshooting extensions and third party plug-ins.

From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.

Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

Hmmmm, i followed the CLEAR CACHE instructions and it seems to have worked... Let me used it for a few whours and i will report back... THANK YOU!!! 🙂

There are a number of utilities that can help you do this, some good and some to be avoided. To be safe, I recommend simply doing the job yourself. You can safely delete everything in the following folders:

~/Library/Caches /Library/Caches

The first of those is found in the user Library folder (which is invisible in Mac OS X 10.7), while the second is found at the root level of the hard drive. If that’s Greek to you, just choose Go -> Go to Folder in the Finder and paste in the first path, then hit return. Delete everything inside that folder. Then repeat with the second folder. Once you’re done, restart the computer.

WOW, this fix worked on my wifes computer also. I hope any and all people who are experiencing a slow Mavericks OS find this thread helpful. I thought it was my Safari browser that was slow, bu it was the entire computer. Opening folders was slow and now a lot, LOT faster.

Again, thanks to Carolyn Samit and Thomas A Reed for their help. Hopefully Will Mallorca is watching this thread and posts his results.

Many thanks Thomas and especially for writing in simple terms for those of us not up to programming level!. Clearing the caches has definitely improved performance, although it is not back to the level I had before moving to Mavericks. I will look for your Mac Performance Guide to see if there is anything else I can improve.

Slainte to all!

Will
