mouse moves cursor but clicks not recognized

Intel MacMini started up yesterday and I wanted to upgrade from 10.8 to Mavericks. Could not move cursor with mouse: tried different mouse, connected directly to computer. Ran DiskWarrior, Reset SMC, reset NVRAM...no go.

Was able to startup with an external hard disk with a bootable version of 10.5.8 and everything worked. Erased hard disk and installed 10.6 from install DVD, then updated to 10.6.8 with downloaded combo installer. Restarted in 10.6.8 ready to go to App Store and download Mavericks installer...

Now the mouse moves the cursor but clicks are not recognized so I am stuck again. Everything seems normal but I can't select anything...

I am really stuck with this one...any help appreciated.

Can't even tell if this is hardware or software related...

Wired...I finally solved the problem by:

starting up from the 10.5.8 hard disk

updating to 10.6 with the install DVD I had kept

updating to 10.6.8 with the downloaded combo installer

updating to Mavericks from the now-available AppStore

all seems to be working!
