Apple suggests that they will:-

See:- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4433#2

Beware - your Mac won't start if you have both types installed. For full details see:-

Mac Pro (Mid2010) Registered DIMM support. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4584

Do your reading thoroughly, or seek advice from Crucial or OWC:- I've had great service & good advice from both in the past - and I'm in the UK, but I've still bought from these guys.

Difference between RDIMM and UDIMM

R = Registered, U = Unregistered, FB = Fully Buffered, 5520 always needs ECC registered fully buffered.

please strictly stick to the memory compatibility list for your motherboard - there are even more differences than buffered vs. unbuffered (eg. single/dual/quad rank) - when purchasing memory not on the compatibility list get a written confirmation from the dealer the modules will work for a certain motherboard.

When you populate slots 3 & 4 you do take a hit as they share one channel.

If 2 memory DIMMs are used per channel, this "...results in a reduction of maximummemory bandwidth for 2DPC (DIMMs per channel) configurations with UDIMM by some 5% in comparison to RDIMM." [1] (p. 14). This is because "...when you go to 2 DIMMs per memory channel, due to the high electrical loading on the address and control lines, the memory controller uses something called a “2T” or “2N” timing for UDIMMs. Consequently every command that normally takes a single clock cycle is stretched to two clock cycles to allow for settling time. Therefore, for two or more DIMMs per channel, RDIMMs will have lower latency and better bandwidth than UDIMMs." [2] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unbuffered_memory

I would say 6 x 4GB only if you don't thiink you will ever need more than 24-32GB. Otherwise look at 8GB DIMMs

Look hard at 8GB DIMMs. My shopping showed that one 8GB DIMM was cheaper than 2@4GB, so there is no reason to buy smaller than 8GB DIMMs any more.

In the US, also look at Data Memory Systems for good quality at modest prices with the usual lifetime replacement and guarantee that:

Thanks for your help, i reading http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4433#2thoroughly, that i know my mac pro support registered dimms , if nothing wrong , 10600R ECC modules will work fine in my mac , OWC or DMS mention by The hatter and Grant Bennet-Alder provide excellent solution, but......I live in china, buy something thought International package delive is a adventure(may take months, goods broken) ,in here, mac pro didn't popular like US, UK, that's why i hardly find a dealer sell 10600E modules, because very rare computer use unbuffered ECC module . last year, my mac pro CPU brokendown(i known it when fix done), Apple Maintenance technician spend 3 month repaire my mac , they guys replace a part and waiting for another part because they didn't have enought replacement part... so you know how rare mac pro in here......Sorry, i get carried away -.-|||

I will buy one 4GB 10600R Ecc module first, make sure it will work in my mac , or refund it .....

thanks for all you people's help...regards
