Nov 21, 2013 7:03 AM in response to Wilsumaby The hatter,You are still using 10.6.8, just to confirm, so you don't have Recovery Mode for one thing. But do you have a backup that is bootable? make one now before you do more. And try repairing the drive as well as doing a Safe Boot.
You may need to do a clean install to another drive. Apparently you have another Mac or something to post and get online so you could also use Target Disk Mode to access the system in trouble.
Update with what from what? what other internal drives are there?

Nov 21, 2013 8:09 AM in response to The hatterby Wilsuma,Thanks Hatter,
I actually ended Shutting down holding the on/off button. Unplugging the Mac Pro for 10 - 15 seconds. Then streching my fingers to hold down the option, command, R and P keys and then pressing the power on.
I then held the keys while waiting to hear 2 start up sounds (this may take a while). After the second start up sound I released the keys and the system started up. I then was able to do the software updates and a restart.
All is well. And now is the time to back up the whole hard drive with Time machine I guess.
Thanks for you rapid response!
