Mac OS XAre you certain that whatever you've downloaded is asking for your Apple ID and password and not your user name and password? Try the latter (must be on an admin account to install new software). The only place where you should be asked for your Apple ID and password is when downloading/purchasing in the Mac App Store.
Try it and see...

Thanks for responding. It could be the latter. I'm just trying to get flash player at the mo. It comes up with 'type password to allow this' and in the Name box it is pre-populated 'Apple' and just has the password box blank so I'm not sure if I just leave the Apple bit and put my password in or what. I may try changing my password on the admin Users and groups system and try it again.
Hopeless at this really!
