external drive failures

I've gone thru three external Seagate and one WesternDigital USB3 drives. They all seem to function fine under Mavericks and then inexplicablly 'die' out wherein the parition can't be mounted. I'm able to completely format the drive and use it for Time Machine again which proves that the drive doesn't have any physical problem but rather a software one. I've completely uninstalled all Seagate and WD components which leads me to believe that Mavericks is significantly buggy to allow such an oversigh as the corruption of external drives (especially ones designated as Time Machine backups).
