Cannot add other account into Messages: bug in Account Type

When I try to add neither a Google or AOL account into Messages, the Account Type combobox (which defaults to "<<Do Not Localize>>") doesn't allow me to select the account type, see the attached image below.

Anyone an idea to fix this?

Thanks.

Hi,

I would check that the System Preferences > Language and Text has a Region and Language selected.

I would also check that the Date and Time is set correctly including the Time Zone.

Hi,

The Pic you posted looks like that pane is a slide from the Main Messages window and that you have Chats listed behind it.

Are you going to Messages > Preferences > Accounts and using the + button at the bottom of the list to Add an Account ?

If not, how are you getting that pane to appear ?

(It looks like it is Messages Menu > Add an Account)

I see this using the Messages menu > Add and Account method

It is strange but I see this:-

I am not sure why the same choices appear again but the Jabber one is clearer.

What Language are you using in Language and Region ?

I have English in the first item and UK and the Region.

In the Advanced Button > General tab I have English set there as well.

In the Keyboard Preference Button I have British selected. (And Only British)

Hi,

In the Applications folder right click the app itself and chose "Show Packages Contents"

This will change to show you the Contents Folder.

This contains a Resource folder as well as others.

There will be a folder for Dutch. (.lproj)

The Resources folder also contains the Sounds and Pics that are used to display the Buddy List, Chat windows, interface and so on.

There are also what are called .nib files that are subroutines for the actions that the app can do.

You cannot see inside these.

It may be that you have to use the Restart with CMD + R to Restore the OS and the Apple Apps to sort this issue.

Hi,

Describe "older" please.

When iChat and early versions of messages were numbered when they had updates (now and then in an OS X update) it never worked if you tired to mix and match parts from different updates.

With Mavericks and Yosemite both versions have been called version 8 despite there being major differences.

However in Yosemite in particular it is difficult to say whether the App has been updated at all.

In the life span on Mountain Lion, Messages was updated only once. (ver 7 to version 7.0.1 at the OS X 10.8.2 update)

There is anecdotal evidence that Messages 8 in Mavericks was updated 3 times but as I said it was never numbered.

It may be that although the OS X update was not supposed to change anything that the app has been corrupted in some way and a earlier Backup was enough to sort things out.
