third gen iPad invalid sim card?

I just read that Verizon is offering $5 data plans for tablets so I decided to see if it would show up on my iPad. I went into the data plan in system prefs and it is telling me I have an invalid sim card? Anyone seen this before or know how to fix it? I’ve used it for data in the past.

Thanks. I contacted Verizon and was told that the sim becomes "invalid" if I don't reactivate it after a certain amount of time. I have to buy a new sim and pay to reactivate if I want to keep using LTE. Really annoyed.
