will mac pro 3.1 startup fron the leopard 10.5.8 clone of a powermac g5 quad,

I have a Powermac G5 Quad running Leopard and am receiving today a Mac Pro 3.1 8 core which also has Leopard installed. Just wondering if a clone of my Powermac G5 drive would would work as a startup drive for the Mac Pro, even though the Mac Pro of course has intell processors. I'm guessing it probably won't, but just wanted to check. Thanks for any help.

No. One is PowerPC based the other of course Intel.

You probably want to pick up 10.6.3 DVD from Apple and then upgrade to 10.6.8+ to be supported. Later you can decide if you want or need Mavericks or something inbetween.

I would not even put your G5 system inside, I would mount it via Firewire external, import the files to a 2nd internal hard rive in your 2008.

Then plan on two backup drives, one for TimeMachine and one to clone your system and always have a bootable backup.

As for the 2008 already having a system, you may just want to wipe it clean and start fresh with your own system and apps. Unless they provided master copies and serial numbers etc.

Some installs of Leopard for the G5 create G5-specific images. These will not run on anything else, not even a G4.

If you have certain "Full Retail" versions of leopard DVDs with 10.5.6 or later, they can be used to Boot and run certain Mac Pro models.
