Mac software scam?

I used MacKeeper tech support to recover some files. After signing off I got a phone call from LogMeIn-Support (foreign voice) telling me that they had been receiving warnings that there were corrupted files on my combuter and I should sign up for their monthly service immediately(for money) or my computer would crash in two weeks. Has anybody heard of these people? I used the remote acess feature for help with the files. Do they have a way into this?

I don't buy anything over the internet. This guy called me stupid.

The first, and best thing you could do for your Mac is to remove that garbage software and never look at it again.

I sure would like to hear how they could possibly make such a specific prediction as two weeks. There's also no way they could get any warnings of corrupt files. Just how would any software do that without testing each individual file and folder for read/write integrity?

The people who sell MacKeeper are shameless.

It's completely a scam. And if you allowed MacKeeper or any other company (other than perhaps Apple themselves) to remote into your system, its security is now compromised. I'd strongly recommend you back up all your data, erase your hard drive, and reinstall the OS and all the apps and then restore your data. That's the only way you can be sure they didn't install some sort of back door or keylogger that would give them entry into your computer and/or capture your personal data such as credit card numbers.

LogMeIn provide legitimate remote control tools for personal use and remote support, however anyone can claim to be who they think will be most convincing. I've had fraudulent calls that claim to be from Microsoft, McAfee, my bank, other banks I don't deal with, and no end of people about "my" outstanding PPI or accident claims, even though I have none. This may be a coincidence, or there could be a connection to your tech support call, but it would be hard to say for certain. FWIW the standard tech support fraud call starts by asking you to look for one or two hidden files that are supposed to be there but they will claim are proof positive that your system has been compromised... What they are after is remote contol of your system, or money to "fix" the non-problem, or both! 😮

Zeobot are the mackeeper propriators, I recentally was using this app,on my macbookpro and after a small amount of time my hard drive became corupted and Disk utility could not allow the repair and or partition of said disk. Experienced techniscions at apple said at least 2twice a month customers bring in macs to have the drive replaced thank you mackeeper! This app is highly frowned upon by Apple if you google this problem you will find out other users of mackeeper crashes regularly Dump It now!!!!!!!

Out of the blue I received a phone call from "Microsoft" about a problem on my computer.

OK. I'll bite: "What is my operating system?"

He was a bit flustered and then said, "Windows."

"Which version."

Silence,

So at that point I began insulting him, his intelligence, and was about to suggest what he could do to himself with a rope, a rafter, and a short chair, but he hung up. Darn!.

Believe me, not one of the five running Macs in my house uses or has installed Microsoft OS. How obvioius a scam can you have?

(Now if I could only say that I don't have that IOS7 wannabee Maverics on my machines I would be a happy man...)
