Can't duplicate CDs any more

My PowerBook seems to have developed a problem whereby it has become unable to duplicate CDs. It's been a while since I copied any CDs on this machine but I know I've done the 10.4.7 update (using combo, permissions etc method without any hitches since done) and may have dome the 10.4.6 update as well since last copying. Anyway, attempts to copy are as follows:
1. WILL NOT direct-copy a CD when the source CD is an external CD drive and the writing is happening on the internal drive
2. WILL successfuly direct-copy a CD when the source CD is in the internal drive and the writing is happening on the external drive.
3. WILL NOT make a CD from a disk image of a CD made in the Mac then burning that image to the internal drive.
4. WILL make a CD from a disk image of a CD made in the Mac then burning that image to the external drive.
Have tried using both internal OSX buring as well as using Toast 7 Titanium
The error messages with Toast (for 1 above) say:
"The drive reported an error: Sense Key= MEDIUM ERROR; Sense Code= 0x0C; WRITE ERROR" which is then followed by:
"The drive reported an error: Sense Key= ILLEGAL REQUEST; Sense Code= 0x30, 0x05; CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM- INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT"
The error messages with OSX burning (for 3 above) say:
"Unable to burn "(CDName here).cdr"- The burn failed because of a medium write error.."

Thing is, I've been using this external drive and these CD blanks (Imation) for a month of Sundays on my Macs for CD copying with no problems... until now. This PowerBook has functioned perfectly with this setup and methodology... until now. Also, the external drive continues to use these blanks without a hitch so I doubt the medium compatibility error.

I'm a bit confused with this. Can drive firmware get 'broken' or a drive just stop working correctly?? Can anyone help me please? Many thanks in advance.

Basically, you are saying the internal drive can read but not write. This wouldn't be a firmware problem. The laser, or some other part of the writing circuits has failed.

FWIW, I was talking to my brother the other night and he mentioned he had gotten his wife yet another CD burner for her machine. She is a photographer and is very dedicated to immediately burning every shoot to CDs, and burns many many of them. He has a theory that CD burners are good for a certain number of burns, and then begin to fail. Also, I have a musician friend who burns lots of CDs, and he has been through quite a number of burners too. Fortunately these days burners are pretty cheap--even Superdrives. You might look into replacing your internal drive with a new one.

Thanks folks for your helpful suggestions. I've since found that there are some brands of blank CDs and DVDs that work with my superdrive (eg Verbatim) and others that don't (even though they did previously! eg Imation) so in effect there is not a problem any more. I am still a bit baffled though as to how or why this would happen at an arbitrary point in the life of the computer... unless there is a difference in the way the CDs are manufactured.
So thanks again folks.
