Apple are telling me that it is possible to add extra RAM from 4GB to 8GB but an independent computer company says this is not possible, who is right?

Recently bought a Macbook Air with 4GB RAM, wasn't asked at the time if I wanted more and at the time didn't think I would need more, that is until I wanted to download 'Adobe Illustrator' (requirements recommend 8GB).

Rang tech help and they said it is possible but Apple don't do it in their stores but a 3rd party could do it. Found a 3rd party (name given by someone at the Manchester apple store - can't remember the company) but they said it is not possible to retro fit RAM to a MacBook Air as there are no loose components in the motherboard and I should have been asked at the time of purchase if I needed extra RAM.

Rang tech help again yesterday and the guy sent me a link of specs for my laptop and insisted it is possible but when I looked carefully at the specs (OSX mountain lion) it does say '8GB memory upgrade' but under the heading 'Configure your MacBook Air to order with these options' - which I interpret as you can only have the extra memory BEFORE you buy.

Does Anyone know if I can add more RAM?

I am also about to chuck my magic mouse out of the window as it is constantly losing its connection and telling me the batteries are low (replaced them 3 times already), rang tech about half a dozen times about this, gave up and plugged in my old usb mouse.

Would be grateful if anyone has any answers to my question.

Many thanks😕

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

its NOT possible RAM is permenently soldered on the macbook AIr logic board,

cant be done 😊

As to "his" comment that "there are no loose components in the motherboard"

that's not true,.. the SSD is a replaceable component on the logic board,...but NOT the RAM (see pic below)

(replaced them 3 times already) on magic mouse........

*Are you using those cheap $ store batteries that die while you look at them? Buy some genuine duracell etc. batts and verify theyre 100% on install and turn your mouse OFF when not in use.

THANK YOU so much for the reply, it seems that not only have the Apple store given me the wrong information, so have two other people on technical helpline support. They all insist I can upgrade to 8GB.

As for the batteries, they are Duracell (definitely not cheap here in the UK) and I make a point of turning the mouse off when I've finished using the Mac, one 'advisor' at Apple even said the mouse could NOT be turned off, go figure !

Bit gutted I didn't just order the upgrade when I bought it. Don't really want to splash out on an iMac just to buy one piece of software but at some point will be upgrading the office computer so might just wait until I win the lottery.

Wish I hadn't bothered buying a magic mouse but I hate those integrated mouse pads. So frustrating when the bluetooth connection consistently drops.

Still getting used to my first Mac so lesson learned there, LOVE the picture you added Plotinus .... thanks again for your help. x

Likely someone misunderstood you since the common question is "can I upgrade my RAM (at time of purchase) on my mac Air?"

answer to that is of course YES,...... meaning "upgrade AT purchase"

its not super rare that someone could mistake the "at" purchase with "after I get it" (which you cannot upgrade).

Ive owned 3 Air, you'll love it and have loads of fun and usefulness out of it you cant get out of an Imac (though I have an Imac, my Air is indispensable).

Have fun 😍
