Q: I've installed Mavericks and My Epsom Stylus Photo TX800FW won't scan. what's happening?

My Epsom Scan Icon Has a circle with a line through it and I get the following dialogue box when I try to open it, "You can’t open the application “EPSON Scan” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."

I thought that Power PC applications did not work on intel equiped iMacs and the scanner was working until I installed Mac OSX Mavericks.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

    Hi m1doc,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has information on what to do if you see that message:

OS X: Application icon has a prohibitory sign, or "PowerPC applications are no longer supported" appears

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3938

    Symptoms

    • When attempting to open a PowerPC-based application, this alert appears:
"You can't open the application (name of application) because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
    • PowerPC-based applications display a white prohibitory sign over their icon in the Finder.

    Resolution

Contact the manufacturer for an updated version of the software that is compatible with current versions of OS X.

There are additional troubleshooting steps for scanner and printer issues here as well:

    Thanks Ari,

Am I incorrect in thinking that when we went from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X we lost the ability to run Power PC software. I had thought there was something that emulated Power PC applications for a while, but that was lost from 9 to X.

My scanner has been working fine on Leopard, Snow Lepoard, Lion and Mountain Lion, and although I realise that the software for the printer is different, it (the Printrt) still works with Mavericks. Its just the Scanner that doesn't.

That would mean that for years, Macs have still been power PC software compatible.

The other thing is that the printer manufacturer directs me to apple for any software updates. i have been to the support pages prior to my posting in the forum and can find nothing that changes my situation.

    Thanks your help anyway

    Cheers
