Saving a scanned document results in a completely black picture. HP says that update should have been automatic with Apple Update Support but there is nothing there to solve the problem.

Try using the Apple Image Capture system. Appliccations, Image Capture.app.

Thanks for that. Sometimes the Image Capture works but other times it does not save properly. I have moved the scanner to an old machine which works although not as well as with the "HP Scan" setting. It is frustrating that an upgrade causes so much problem for a basic function like printing or scanning.
