How do I get Quick Look to show .stl file 3d models?

Hey folks

Previous OS using quick look showed a picture of the 3d file (.stl format) used in 3d printing

Upgraded to mavericks....no preview.

Anyone know how I can get Quick Look to show a preview picture of the 3d model? Not sure how it worked in the first place.

many thanks!

A

Quick Look support begins with creating a Quick Look generator plug-in from Xcode. Apple provided generators are installed in /System/Library/QuickLook, and third-party Quick Look generators are expected to be installed in /Library/QuickLook. There is also a ~/Library/QuickLook folder that is likely empty.

Mavericks installation may have stepped on part of your third-party application installation, and/or that Quick Look generator plug-in is now (obviously) incompatible.

If your third-party vendors' Quick Look generator plug-in is not working, the short list is:

  1. Re-install the third-party application that is states compatibility with Mavericks, and installs the Quick Look generator plug-in
  2. Check with the vendor to determine if they have provided the following:

An update to the Quick Look generator plug-in for Mavericks

Hi,

I'm working on it.

I just released a new version of Pleasant3D (v2.3.1) which integrates a lot of new functionality (e.g. slic3r support and more).

Unfortunately this update still doesn't fix the Quicklook problem on Mac OS X 10.9. Although I found the problem, I still don't have a solution for this.

However, I implemented much better error checking in the Quicklook plugins and an automatic fallback to display the standard document icon if the plugin fails. That way at least the Quicklook deamon (quicklookd) doesn't crash anymore in case the preview generation fails.

I try to find a fix for the Quicklook problem as soon as possible (if any Mac OpenGL offscreen experts are around, I could really need some help with this...)

Cheers,

Eberhard

I guess, it looks that way. Strange...

In the meantime, I got reply from Apple's developer technical support. They said, that this would be a bug in Mac OS 10.9's OpenGL implementation and that I should write a bug report.

That's what I did, more than a month ago, including sample code and the whole shebang (Bug #15726840).

No reaction from Apple, though. )

The bugreport still simply sits there, state "Open" and "no rank", no reaction. Kind of disappointing...

My .stl QuickLook hasn't been working for a while and thought I'd have a go at making it work again.

I used to use Pleasant3D just for the QuickLook plugin but it hasn't worked in a while. I've tried a few different 3D printing hosts including Cura but I normally use Repetier.

I've just tried http://www.elektriktrick.com/sw_quicklook.html and it too didn't work, but on following the debugging instructions I found that my Mac was looking to a plugin loctaed in the Cura app. Upon deleting Cura and resetting QuickLook I now have .stl QuickLook and Icons working with the Elektriktrick plugin.

The Pleasant3D plugin may now work too, I just haven't tried it.

I hope this helps.
