My wife has an ipad with retina display (lightning connector) and I have a 55" analog tv with composite (RCA) connections. What can I do to watch things from the ipad on our TV (short of buying a digital TV)??

As, steve said if you are trying to use the iPad to turn your tv into an HD tv, it won't display in HD at all.
Most TVs cannot easily show full HD (their spec books tell me that).
If it only has RCA, it may well *ONLY* support 480-class display of anything. My older 27 in tube is one that can only show 480 from external inputs.
You are kind of out of luck, I don't think there is any way to do it except from the apple tv box, (which comes with netflix pre-installed anyway so it kind of renders the iPad useless in that department) Also if you did find a way to get it to work, it would be close to impossible to get it in fullscreen.

I actually tried this. I HAVE the AV cable, so I bought the lightning to 30-pin, but it doesn't support video.
Other suggestions???
I only advise what may happen so you have correct expectations. I would be unhappy (not being sarcastic) if you paid for the adapter and found the image to be unacceptable.
