Q: restore factory defaults

I just bought a secondhand Mac and want to wipe all content and start from new. How do I restore the factory default?

What model Mac is it?   Go to the  menu and select About this Mac.  In the window that comes up click on the More Info button.

In the System report under Hardware will the the Model Identifier:

We need to know what model it is in order to give you directions on how to get it back to the factory settings. Things changed around 2011.
