Q: Pages/Numbers misteries after update to 5

First, we agree that putting an app in the dock create an alias right?

And if I update  an app the dock alias will be linked to that updated app, right? Also because the older version is not there, being updated...

So I've updated my iMac to mavericks and then updated iPhoto, iMovies, Pages and Numbers. As expected in the app folder I have those 4 apps updated version and the old ones are gone.

Clicking iPhoto and iMovie icon in the dock will automatically change that old icon to the new one and open the updated app.

But clicking Pages and Numbers icon in the dock will still open the old ones!! And clicking the Pages and Numbers icon in the app folder will open the new one!!

As the only app in the app folder is the new one, where the aliases in the dock are linked to? Where is the old Pages and Numbers apps that stiill seems to be there? And why is still there?

And there's more. My father bought a new mac, with mavericks, and isntalled Pages and numbers. So whe have the same os and the same new versions of Pages and Numbers. But the looks are different. His are new new, mine are a mixture of the new and the old one!!

I don't understand...

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

    Hi Ranmaboy,

The old versions are in a subfolder within Applications named iWork '09.  They're still there in case you need to use them! The old and new versions have different features. See the features gained, features lost, and workarounds threads for more on this. Also see Apple's support document on features to be added back.

If you're going to be using Numbers 3 you might want to drag its alias to the Dock. The icons are similar so it's important not to confuse them.  Numbers 2.3 can't directly open documents you've opened in Numbers 3.0 but from Numbers 3.0 you can File > Export to > Numbers '09...

To my knowledge, new Macs runnng Mavericks come with the new versions pre-installed, and no old versions are included.  That would account for the difference.
