Adding a tone to 4s

I had to switch computers (Win 7 64bit) so have latest iTunes, and IOS on my iPhone 4s. I don't want to loose my ringtones, music, etc off my phone but want to add a new ringtone. The ringtone shows up in iTunes and when I try to drag it to my phone I get the + but it never shows up on the phone. If I check the box to sync tones it tells me that I will loose the tones on my phone. I don't want to do that. So what am I doing wrong?
