Nov 23, 2013 8:42 PM in response to Beachluvr333by ChrisJ4203,You can only restore to a backup. If the backup is not current, then that is the only choice you have. You say you do not have an iCloud backup, so you can only restore to the last backup that you made. Anything done since that backup is lost.

Nov 24, 2013 9:59 AM in response to ChrisJ4203by Beachluvr333,I am clear about the need to restore, however, I am conflicted about information I keep reading about the data. This is clearly a common problem as searches have turned up hundreds of thousands of persons inquiring about the same issue.. spontaneous 'recovery mode'. Researching the topic leads me to believe the data may be deleted but is not actually erased?! That being said, how is it or is it possible to recover that stored data? Any and all help to recover is appreciated!!

Nov 24, 2013 10:01 AM in response to Beachluvr333by ChrisJ4203,★HelpfulYour only recovery is from a backup as I described in my first post. If you do not have a backup, then you cannot recover. There are numerous claims of special software that one can use to get into the phone and recover things that have been deleted. Up to you if you want to believe this hype and buy into it. However, there is no way via the iPhone or iTunes to recover data after a restore from Recovery Mode.

Nov 24, 2013 10:06 AM in response to Beachluvr333by Beachluvr333,Thank you for your information and honesty. I can not believe with this being a common and known issue with iphones, apple has not resolved the problem and created a data recovery ability itself. I bout the iphone because everyone convinced me it was so reliable, and it crashed spontaneously, without warning. Not so much a believer any longer. Just makes no sense

Nov 24, 2013 10:11 AM in response to Beachluvr333by ChrisJ4203,★HelpfulThink of the iPhone as a mini-computer. Things happen, devices fail. Think of the number of devices out there in the world. The best thing to remember about using the iPhone or any other smart phone/computer is to ensure that you have a backup. Do you backup your computer? What would happen if within the next few minutes your computer failed? The backup is what contains your data recovery, however if you are not doing regular backups, you will not be able to recover the data, no matter who manufactures the device. The iPhone has a remarkable ability to restore from a backup and put your device right back the way it was when that backup was created. This "crashing" is not unique to the iPhone. Your assessment of the phone's reliability is what you believe. I have had phones crash, and I've had iPhones since the beginning. I have a daily backup to recover to. Today, with iCloud it is made even easier to recover.

Such a "solution" is unnecessary and adds to risk. Data recovery techniques are far from 100% reliable, and should never be relied on. They also add security holes for malware attacks.
The protection from data loss has long been provided by frequent backups, which have been automatic whenever the phone is charging for several years. If you recklessly chose to defeat this procedure, you did so at your own risk.

Nov 24, 2013 10:52 AM in response to ChrisJ4203by Beachluvr333,...agreed, and that is valuable information. I do regular system backups on my computer, and when the OS did fail unexpectdly, even though I could not access my computer, the data was recoverable prior to a re-install of the operating system. I also do have my phone set to back up regularly when charging. I don't see those backups listed, only the one when it was physically connected to my computer. It's not the first phone i've had crash, and like computers, it won't be the last. It's just incredibly upsetting to say the least. I was of the belief when the phone was set up for me at the store that all of the settings were in place to avoid this kind of situation. Not everyone knows computers/phones as well as those that work with them daily. Unfortunately I am at the hands of those who sell these items to me and learn as I go, and unfortunately too often, from crashes and mistakes such as these.

Nov 24, 2013 10:58 AM in response to modular747by Beachluvr333,..I understand your point and never anticipated this problem with the iphone. I switched to apple for that very reason, I had other smart phones crash and lost everything. I'm confused about the automatic backups you speak of however, I have never disabled this ability, so why is it they do not show up on my list. Are they perhaps there and I just don't have them listed? I protect my computer with frequent backups to an external hard drive, I believed my phone was backing up per the settings as well. If so, where is the back up located?

Nov 24, 2013 11:00 AM in response to Beachluvr333by ChrisJ4203,If it was backing up when charging, then the backup is in iCloud, not in iTunes. You may be better of checking on the User Guide since you are not so familiar with the iPhone. No disrespect intended, but I understand the learning curve for some. Here is a link for the User Guide. http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1565/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf
You might also want to do a little searching for information about iCloud backups.

Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage > select your device > shows size and date of last backup
