MacBook Pro & HP 2211x monitor won't talk

Hello smart folks,

My MacBook Pro running on OS X 10.8.5 won't recognize the HP 2211x (VGA, DVI only) monitor and vice versa. I'd assumed, wrongly, that it would be a simple matter of plugging everything in. Looking around online suggests otherwise. Even HP support describes the monitor as plug and play and then wants to charge $60 to show me how to get it to work. [Gotta love that.]

I've got the Mac Mini-DVI adapter plugged into the HP cables. All other cables and cords are plugged in according to instructions.

The monitor lights up. Scans for the DVI connection. Doesn't find it. Goes to sleep.

System preferences don't include 1920 x 1080 as an option. (Or I don't know where to find that optoin.) Nor do I know where to adjust for the required 60 Hz.

I've seen mention of plugging and unplugging the power supply, but that doesn't seem to work. But, since I don't understand the logic behind it, I may be doing it wrong.

Quite possibly I've wasted my time and money on the wrong component. Again.

Insight appreciated!

THis is the exact email I just got from HP Support, fyi:

This is with regard to the HP LV2311 23-inch LED Backlit LCD Monitor which is not working with a new MAC PC and was working with older MAC computer.

I would like to inform you that HP monitors are not supported in a Mac environment. However, some Macs use graphics with VESA modes and can display to most HP LCD monitors. To do this, connect the monitor to the Mac while the Mac is off, and then turn on the MAC. The monitor should operate at 60Hz. The INF and software for the HP monitor are for Microsoft Windows and cannot be run in a standard MAC OS environment. That is the reason where there are no drivers for MAC.

You could also check with Apple support if the current MAC PC that you are using has VESA support for recognizing the monitor. If it does, then please connect the monitor when the MAC is powered OFF and then try starting the unit and see if it monitor works fine.
