Ok, this is my situation...I just got an xbox 360, and I will be moving into a college dorm at FSU in August. I have a macbook with only mac os x on it right now. What are all the requirements and everything I need to obtain full acces to xbox360 live from my dorm? (Do i need to use bootcamp for windows, what kind of netowkring, etc?) Thank you so much for the help.
Macbook,
Mac OS X (10.4.7),
100 GB HD, 1 gb RAM, 2.0 ghz
So if im on wireless at my dorm i just connect the ethernet cable friom my xbox360 to the macbook? But what about if need to use an ethernet cable to go on the internet on my macbook, then what do i do?
You could buy a wireless adapter for your 360 and then connect wirelessly to your Macbook. Then, connect to the internet via Ethernet cord plugged into your macbook. Seems simple enough, but it may require some software, i have no idea. For my original Xbox i connect it to 1 of my 2 ethernet ports and then my internet to the second, and i use XBC instead of XB Live. Anyway, thats on my Dell.
On and off-topic post, i'm getting my macbook Tuesday!
Black Macbook: 2.0 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HDD Mac OS X (10.4.6) Boot Camp with WinXP installed
You'll need to turn Internet Sharing on your MacBook. Go to: System Preferences/Sharing/Internet
Choose: Share your connection from Airport, and put a check mark on the port that in the list below. Then plug your Xbox 360 with a network cable into the Macbook. You'll probably need a network crossover cable. You can pick up a Network Crossover cable at most computer stores.
How is your dorm going to be setup? Is there going to be a Network (Interent) port in the wall so you can plug your Macbook into it? Or is it totally wireless?
If there's a port in your room, you can go out and spend $20-$50 on a 4 port network hub. You plug a cable from the wall into the Uplink port on the hub. Then you can plug your Macbook and your Xbox 360 with separate cables into the hub.
If it's a wireless dorm, you can purchase the Xbox 360 Wireless adapter. Hopefully the wireless network in your dorm is using WEP security or no security at all. If it's using WPA2 security, you'll be in trouble because the Xbox 360 wireless adapter doesn't support WPA2 security. All this might be over your head, but the more information you can get the better chance we can help you.
There will for sure be a internet port to connect an thernet cable to my macbook. If i get a network crossover cable, do i also need that 4 port network hub also?
You will need the hub if you're going to connect your Macbook directly into the wall. If you're going to connect your Macbook wirelessly, if they have that available in your dorm, I would just plug the Xbox 360 directly into the wall.
If they don't and all you have is the port in the wall, it would be cheaper to go with the 4 Port Network Hub, since the Wireless Adapter for the Xbox runs $99, while the 4 port hub runs lower then half that price.
Do you need to have internet available to both at the same time? Or would it be too much of a hassle to just plug in one at a time? Like, if you're going to play your 360, unplug the MacBook, and then when you're done playing, unplug the 360 and connect the MacBook back up.
Several universities only allow one device to connect to the internet in their halls of residence - i.e., your computer. In many cases, simply plugging the Xbox into the wall won't work, because the internet is registered specifically for the computer.
