How to enable Hypervisor with win8.1 in bootcamp

I have a new macbook pro i7 with windows 8.1 installed and hyper-v started. But I cannot start any virtual machine for win server or win phone. The error reprorted was: "vm could'nt be started because hypervisor is not runnning." I read on your support pages that it should be enabled by default - but it isnt. EPT is there so it should be present.

Can anyone help get the Hypervior running?

info from ms Coreinfo is:

When you boot into MacOS first and then into Windows, thats the result of coreinfo and hyperv is working

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4288U CPU @ 2.60GHz

Intel64 Family 6 Model 69 Stepping 1, GenuineIntel

HYPERVISOR * Hypervisor is present

VMX - Supports Intel hardware-assisted virtualization

EPT - Supports Intel extended page tables (SLAT)

when you boot directly into windows you get your results

Can anybody tell us why it makes a difference when you boot into macos first??

I am running Windows 8.1 on a Macbook Pro Late 2011 installed using bootcamp with apple drivers for windows etc. I have Windows 8.1 as default startup disk. Hyper-V works fine when logged into windows as local administrator using a local account. Not sure if this will help.

I've found that I always have to boot into OSX and then reboot into Windows 8.1 if I want the hyper-v hypervisor to come up. It's pretty annoying. It wasn't always this way. This is new behavior.

It'd be nice if Apple could fix this in the BIOS (or the BIOS equivalent) so that it's always enabled. I *think* that it's enabled by the OSX OS and stays on until you reboot...and then it starts in the default "off" position. 😟

I have a 2014 Mac Pro which is installed and up to date with Mavericks, I installed Server 2012 R2 through BootCamp and I cannot get hyper-v to start. Hyper-v installed ok but when I go to start the VM it gives the error stating that the hypervisor is not running.

I have tried starting into OSX and rebooting into windows, running the bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto command and removing and reinstalling hyper-v with no luck.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks
Rob

I ran into the same issue with MAC PRO, However in my environment even booting into mac osx then rebooting into Windows 2012 R2 does not work.

It's seemed that people have got it working on previous version of mac before. When I run coreinfo.exe hypervisor is never present although VMT and EPT are.

Hope apple would fix this in there UEFI firmware upgrade:(

I have found the following steps to be foolproof on my MacBook Pro Core i7 4th gen (Oct 2013)

My boot camp default boot is the Windows 8.1 disk.

1) POWER DOWN COMPLETELY (Important)

2) Boot (holding Option) select Mac OSX 10.9 (You don't need to log in, just boot to sign-in screen)

3) Re-boot (do not power down, just restart. Apparently this preserves the hypervisor setting.)

4) (if Windows is not your default, make sure you select Windows during re-boot)

5) Hypervisor is now running and Hyper-V will now start VM's

For ad-hoc vm's I use VirtualBox. Current versions wont run vhdx disks but for simple configurations it is fast and has a better console.

I second an earlier request that Apple fix this and get us an update.
